The Story Continues Through the Lives We Touch

When Kyle Smith first came to Hope for New Haven, he was a young child still finding his voice. Raised by a single mother, Kyle’s family was doing everything they could to create opportunity  and Hope became an extension of that support system from the very beginning.

What began in Hope’s preschool classrooms and continued through after-school and summer programming quickly became something much deeper. Hope wasn’t just a place Kyle went each day; it was a community that showed up for him and his mom in tangible, meaningful ways.

“Hope for New Haven means community, faith, and growth.”

Staff didn’t just focus on academics. They understood that for a single-parent household, support often has to extend beyond the classroom. They took the extra mile seriously. Whether it was organizing outings to the movies, creating experiences he might not otherwise have had, or simply providing steady mentorship and encouragement, Kyle felt seen and supported.

That consistency mattered.

Hope helped him build communication skills, strengthen his faith, and grow into himself. What started as a shy child slowly transformed into a confident young leader because adults around him believed in his potential  and acted on it.

“Hope for New Haven helped me grow — in confidence, faith, and who I am today.”

That foundation carried him through high school and into college. Today, Kyle is studying mechanical engineering at Temple University, pursuing a future filled with possibility. But even as he builds his own path, he remains connected to the place that helped shape it.

Now, Kyle returns to Hope as a summer counselor, mentoring the next generation of children,  some from families just like his,  ensuring they, too, experience the stability, opportunity, and care that helped change his trajectory.

Kyle’s story is a full-circle testament to what sustained community investment can do. Hope for New Haven is more than a program,  it is a village that steps in, goes the extra mile, and grows alongside families every step of the way.
