Our Story

Faith In Action Since 2001

For more than 25 years, Hope For New Haven has been strengthening children, supporting families, and serving our community through Christ-centered education, compassionate service, and a steadfast belief that every child deserves the opportunity to flourish.

Hope For New Haven was founded in 2001 with a simple but powerful calling: to strengthen children, families, and communities through Christ-centered education and compassionate service.

What began in the basement of Christ Presbyterian Church, serving just 30 children in infant, toddler, and preschool programs, has grown into a dynamic nonprofit organization committed to expanding opportunity and advancing educational equity across Greater New Haven. Responding to a call from then-Mayor John DeStefano to increase access to early childhood education, Hope was established to meet an urgent community need while remaining firmly rooted in faith.

How Our Vision Has Grown

Then...

In 2006, we expanded our programs to include after-school and summer camp opportunities, allowing us to serve even more children and families. Our move to 81 Olive Street in historic Wooster Square marked another important milestone, creating a safe, welcoming environment where children could learn, grow, and thrive.

Inspired by the pioneering work of Dr. Edward Zigler, architect of the federal Head Start program, our educational philosophy continues to emphasize high-quality early learning, strong family partnerships, and equitable opportunities for every child.

Looking Beyond Our Walls

Expanding Hope's Reach

Recognizing that lasting change requires investing not only in children but also in the educators and systems that support them, Hope launched CERCLE, a statewide collaborative dedicated to strengthening Connecticut's early childhood workforce, supporting providers, and advancing equitable outcomes for children and families.

Today, CERCLE extends Hope's mission beyond our classrooms by equipping leaders, fostering collaboration, and helping build stronger early childhood systems across Connecticut.

Our Next Chapter

Building the Future of Early Childhood Education

For more than 25 years, Hope For New Haven has responded to the changing needs of children and families with faith, innovation, and a commitment to educational excellence. Today, that mission continues through the development of two new early childhood education centers designed to expand access to high-quality, Christ-centered learning for even more families.

Building on the success of Hope Child Development Center, these new centers will extend our impact into additional New Haven neighborhoods while remaining rooted in the same values that have guided Hope since 2001. Together, they represent our commitment to creating welcoming environments where children can thrive and families are supported long before a child enters kindergarten.

Impact Stories

The Story Continues Through the Lives We Touch

Hope's greatest achievements aren't measured by buildings or programs. They're reflected in the children who grow into confident learners, the families who find lasting support, and the educators who dedicate their lives to serving others.
